Viviane Reding
European Commissioner for Information Society and Media
Commissioner Viviane Reding has been the European Commissioner for Information Society and Media since 2004. Prior to her current role, Commissioner Reding was European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth, Media and Sport in the Prodi Commission from 1999 to 2004.
Commissioner Reding started her political career as a member of the Luxembourg Parliament in 1979, where she served until 1989. During her 10 years of service, she was appointed president of the social committee and was a member of the Assembly of Benelux Parliaments and the Office of the Chamber of Deputies. She was also a city councilor of Esch-sur-Alzette from 1981 to 1999.
In 1989, she was elected to the European Parliament where she became President of the Petitions Committee from 1989 to 1992, Vice-President of the Social Committee from 1992 to 1994 and later the Vice President of the Civil Liberties and Internal Affairs Committee from 1997 to 1999.
She was also the Head of the Luxembourg delegation to the EPP group.
A journalist by profession, Commissioner Reding also worked for the Luxemburg Wort for 21 years and served as president of the Luxembourg Union of Journalists from 1986 to 1998.
Commissioner Reding holds a Doctorate in Human Sciences from the Sorbonne University, Paris.
